Underground River 2000

Now known as the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park, it was the Underground River when we visited in 2000.  Very beautiful area with lots of wildlife, great harbour and beach and interesting cave.  There were lots of monkeys who loved to steal our bananas.   They also gave the resident Monitor lizards (Komodo Dragons) a hard time.  While the monitor lizards were docile to humans when we were there, we felt sorry for them because of the harassment they received from the monkeys.

After a morning at the Underground River, we hired a private banca to take is up to El Nido.

We visited El Nido after spending the previous day down south touring the Underground River.  Had to hire a private banca to transport us between the two.

We stayed at a local budget hotel on the beach near town.  Was a wonderful stay where we took daily island hopping trips and got our first taste of snorkling and the incredible underwater world of the Philippines.  While the accomodations were basic, the view was incredible and meeting and mixing with the local people and feasting with them at night was one of our most memorable trips.

Coron 2004

Coron city and Coron Island are part of the Calamian Group of islands in the northern part of Palawan.  Coron city is located on Busuanga Island, the largest island of the group.  Coron island is near Coron city, a short banca ride away in Coron Bay.  When people refer to “Coron” they are often referring to the Calamian Group of many islands, not just Coron island.

The islands are some of the most amazing in all of the Philippines.  Limestone peaks and cliffs, great snorkling and scuba diving (including fresh water, cave and wreck), beautiful lagoons and a wildlife sanctuary make this one of the most desired nature holiday destinations in the world.

These photos were taken over several trips between 1999 and 2004.  The shots taken on the ship were on the WG&A ferry between Manila and Coron where we had an individual suite (it was an overnight voyage).  The horses were from a group that offered horseback riding activities.

Many of the photos were taken with a first generation digital camera so the image quality is not up to today’s standards.  Minor white balance correction on most of these photos has helped, but not much we can do about limited color depth and resolution.

Well, except to schedule a return trip to take more photos!

Rock Formations

The Philippines is blessed with so many beautiful islands.  Along with the many wonderful beaches, many islands also have beautiful rugged terrain surrounding the islands.  Tall limestone cliffs and other interesting formations are common in the Isla Gigantes area (as well as some other parts of the Philippines).

The pictures below were taken during our many island hopping trips around Isla Gigantes.
